In this intensive masterclass, you will learn from Miguel Molet how to make, color, polish, test, apply, and finish your own terra sigillata. From application to smoke firing, after five days you will have mastered all the techniques. We will not be wheel throwing in this workshop, so it is also suitable for hand builders!

This course is taught in Spanish/English, but translation will be provided.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

To acquire knowledge about the production, characteristics, and handling of terra sigillatas and colloidal slips, and their subsequent development into some decorative techniques.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

1. Knowledge of the different types of clay, both for making sigillata and for use in clay supports.

2-Preparation and adaptation of the support clay for working with Terras Sigillatas (polishing and burnishing)

3-Presentation and discussion of different types of chemical deflocculants for soil settling, and use and practice of Sodium Hexametaphosphate.

4-Introduction to the Sigillatas production process, characteristics, and working options.

5-Application to clay and creation of a color test

6-Coloring sigillatas with ceramic pigments (oxides), and demonstration of working with soluble salts.

7- Knowledge and practice of application techniques

8- Knowledge and development of some decorative techniques (reserves, stencils, sgraffito, marbling, bubble technique, smoke firing, etc.).

9- Knowledge and development of a standard firing, one firing at low temperature (980°C) and another at high temperature (1200°C).

10- Development of a smoke firing to complete the course (in Raku).

This masterclass takes place during ‘The Great Ceramics Summer Event’ in Duffel, Belgium We work outdoors under a luxurious stretch tent while enjoying the beautiful green surroundings We also have lunch outdoors. During summer event, there are still numerous activities and workshops. You can find the shedule here

  • Intermediate bisque firing of tests and samples

Lunch: for those who wish, we will provide a healthy, varied lunch. (Vegetarian options are available on request, but it has proven no longer possible to accommodate all allergies and preferences; in that case, please bring your own.)

Required experience: experience with clay is recommended; prior knowledge of terra sigillata is not required. Suitable for both wheel throwers and hand builders.

Miguel Molet is a Spanish ceramic artist who has specialized in terra sigillata for over 25 years. He combines this ancient technique with a clear, contemporary formal language and is known for his calm, restrained, and meticulously constructed work.
Since 2006, he has been teaching in his studio in Albelda (Huesca), where he guides ceramic artists from within and outside Europe in both technique and process.Sinds 2006 geeft hij les in zijn atelier in Albelda (Huesca), waar hij keramisten van binnen en buiten Europa begeleidt in zowel techniek als proces.
